What a medical emergency abroad actually costs
OHIP and other provincial health plans offer little to no coverage the moment you leave your province, and essentially nothing once you leave Canada. An air ambulance from the United States to Toronto can exceed $50,000. A week in an American hospital intensive care unit can top $150,000. These aren't worst-case scenarios. They happen all the time.
Travel insurance exists to sit between you and those numbers. It covers the emergency, coordinates with the hospital, and gets you home safely. Without it, you're negotiating directly with a foreign billing department while you're sick.
What travel insurance covers
Emergency medical care
Hospital stays, physician visits, emergency surgery, diagnostic tests, and specialist referrals caused by a sudden illness or accident while you're travelling.
Medical evacuation
Air ambulance or medical transport back to Canada if your condition requires it, including a medical escort when necessary.
Trip cancellation & interruption
Reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel before departure or cut your trip short due to a covered event.
Lost or delayed baggage
Compensation for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage, and for essential items you need to buy if your bags are delayed on arrival.
Travel delays
Coverage for meals, accommodations, and additional expenses when your trip is delayed beyond a set number of hours due to a covered cause.
Accidental dental
Emergency dental treatment required because of an accidental blow to the mouth during your travels.
Coverage details, limits, and exclusions vary by plan and insurer. Jatinder will walk you through the policy wording before you purchase.

Not the same as super visa insurance
Super visa insurance is a separate product designed for parents and grandparents visiting Canada. It covers visitors coming here. This travel insurance product covers Canadians going abroad. If you're looking for coverage for a parent or grandparent visiting from outside Canada, see our super visa insurance page.
